Iran FM Urges Global Condemnation of US Illegal Threats

According to Khabaronline, an Iranian news agency, In the letter, Seyed Abbas Araghchi described the recent statements by the US president as a clear violation of fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, calling on governments to take a firm and explicit stance against such provocative rhetoric. He warned that silence in the face of these threats would undermine the international legal order and encourage lawlessness.

Referring to remarks made by the US president on 29 December 2025, the Iranian foreign minister stressed that any threat of the use of force against a sovereign state constitutes a blatant breach of the UN Charter, which explicitly prohibits threats or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of States. 

Araghchi also recalled the joint military attack by the United States and Israel against Iran in June 2025, arguing that the latest threats should be seen as part of an ongoing, illegal, and aggressive pattern of behavior.

He stated that the continuation of this approach reflects clear bad faith on the part of Washington and that the United States will bear full responsibility for the consequences.

Highlighting the US president’s public admission of direct American involvement in the June 2025 attacks on Iranian civilians, critical infrastructure, and Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, Araghchi said such actions amount to serious violations of international law and could entail individual criminal responsibility for the relevant US officials.

In another part of the letter, the Iranian foreign minister described the US president’s threats against a UN member state in support of Israel as evidence of double standards in the international system and a serious blow to the non-proliferation regime. He emphasized that unconditional US support for Israel—widely regarded as the only possessor of nuclear weapons in West Asia—has gravely endangered regional and international security.

Warning about the dangerous consequences of global inaction, Araghchi noted that fostering a culture of impunity has emboldened the United States and Israel to continue aggressive behavior, posing a direct threat to international peace and security.

In conclusion, he reaffirmed Iran’s inherent and undeniable right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter, stating that the Islamic Republic of Iran would not hesitate to deliver a decisive and deterrent response to any act of aggression against its sovereignty or vital national interests.

In parallel with this letter, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also sent two separate communications to the UN Secretary-General, the President of the UN Security Council, and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, formally conveying Iran’s strong protest against what it described as the US president’s provocative and illegal threats.
